Located in New Windsor, New York, Stewart International Airport is an aviation gem that has been steadily gaining recognition as a vital transportation hub in the region. It’s becoming easier than ever for Dutchess County residents to fly to business or vacation destinations around the world.

A Rich History
Originally established in 1930 as a military airfield, Stewart Airport has a rich history that spans over nine decades. Named after First Lieutenant Stewart, a local Newburgh resident who perished during World War I, the airport has witnessed various transformations and expansions. During World War II, it served as a vital military airbase, facilitating the transportation of troops and supplies. In 1970, it was converted into a public airport, opening its doors to commercial flights and paving the way for its role as a vital regional aviation hub. It’s part of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

A Strategic Location
One of Stewart Airport’s key advantages is its easy-peasy, traffic-free location, nestled about halfway between New York City and Albany. Situated just 60 miles north of Manhattan, the airport serves as a convenient gateway for both leisure and business travelers. With its accessibility to major highways, including Interstate 84 and the New York State Thruway, Stewart Airport offers seamless connections to the surrounding areas, making it an attractive alternative to other congested airports further south. For Poughkeepsie area residents, it’s a 45-minute drive.

Modern Facilities and Expansion
Stewart Airport has undergone significant modernization and expansion efforts in recent years, enhancing its capacity and capabilities. The terminal building has been upgraded with state-of-the-art amenities, including modern check-in counters, expanded security screening areas, and improved passenger lounges. In addition, the airport has expanded its runway system and upgraded its air traffic control tower to accommodate larger aircraft and handle increased air traffic. These improvements have positioned Stewart Airport to handle over 2 million passengers annually, with airlines offering both domestic and international flights.

Current Airlines
Stewart Airport is served by several airlines, offering a range of domestic and international flights:

  1. Allegiant Air: Allegiant Air is a low-cost carrier that offers flights to various destinations, primarily focusing on leisure travel. They provide direct flights from Stewart Airport to destinations such as Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Myrtle Beach.
  2. Atlantic Airways: Atlantic is offering flights to Vágar and the Faroe Islands.
  3. Frontier Airlines: Non-stop service to Orlando, Florida.
  4. Play Airlines: Play flies direct to Reykjavik, Iceland with connections to Europe.

As the airport continues to grow and expand, it will play a crucial role in connecting the Hudson Valley region to the rest of the world, ensuring a prosperous future for surrounding counties.
