Spotlight on Our Neighbor: Hyde Park

October 7, 2022

Set on the banks of the Hudson River, and located just 20 minutes from LaGrange, Hyde Park is one of New York State’s hidden gems. The town is best known for being the lifelong home of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and many of the top sites here are related to his life and work, But there’s much more to Hyde Park than its historical roots—you’ll also find great restaurants and shops, beautiful parks, and plenty of opportunities to explore the great outdoors.
Here are some of our top picks:
Visit FDR’s Childhood Home
Take a step back in time at the home where FDR spent his childhood summers. The home has been preserved as a museum, and you can tour the grounds and learn about FDR’s early life.
Explore Vanderbilt Mansion
This grand house was built by one of FDR’s ancestors, Cornelius Vanderbilt II. Today, it is operated as a museum by the National Parks Service. Guided tours are available, or you can explore the grounds on your own. Vanderbilt Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Visit Springwood, FDR’s Presidential Library
Springwood was Roosevelt’s family estate and the site of his presidential library. The library houses a research center, archives, museum exhibits, and more. You can also take a guided tour of the grounds or explore them on your own. Springwood is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Stop by Val-kill Cottage
This was Eleanor Roosevelt’s personal retreat while her husband was in office. It is now open to the public as a museum dedicated to ER’s life and work. Val-kill Cottage is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Hyde Park Trail
Many of Hyde Park’s historical attractions are connected by this scenic trail. The trail is open year-round for walking, running, biking, and picnicking.
Llama Hike at Clover Brook Farm
Take a llama hike through New York’s Hudson Valley on this working farm located just outside of town. Clover Brook Farm also offers farm-to-table dining experiences—be sure to make reservations in advance!
Artists’ Collective of Hyde Park Gallery
Browse works by local artists at this gallery which features rotating exhibitions throughout the year. The Artists’ Collective also offers classes and workshops for all ages if you’re interested in trying your hand at painting or other visual arts media.
Hyde Park Antiques Center
Located in a building that once operated as a stage stop, the Hyde Park Antiques Center offers over 9,500 square feet of authentic antiques and collectibles for treasure-hunting.
Riverfront Park
Have a picnic, throw a party, take a walk, or just sit and watch the sunset from this gorgeous waterside spot.
Hyde Park is a small town with big charm, and one of many reasons why we love Sleight Farm’s central location in the heart of Dutchess County and the Hudson Valley.
