Our Model Home Interior Designer Helen Piteo Discusses Open Concept Spaces and How To Achieve “Attainable Luxury”

July 30, 2020

Open model new home at The Glens, part of Sleight Farm's new home community in the Hudson ValleyOur Clark model home at The Glens is now open! Sleight Farm welcomes visitors to come see for themselves what makes these designer new homes so unique, including:

  • A personalized and positive design process with the renowned Hudson Valley home builders at LMD.
  • Our private Dutchess County, Hudson Valley location with scenic views, yet close to amenities such as Vassar Brothers hospital, Metro North, Amtrak, and the Taconic Parkway.
  • The highly-rated Arlington School District, including Overlook Primary School just minutes away.

We had the extreme pleasure of working with Helen Piteo Interiors to turn this model home into a comfortable, multi-functional space you can imagine coming home to. We asked Helen to share her insights and experience with homebuyers:

SF: How did you approach the open layout of this home’s first floor?

HP: The lack of walls in an open floor plan permits us to be much more creative with the space, as well as our design plan. We do not need walls to create different lifestyle spaces and Sleight Farm’s Clark model is the perfect example of how an open floor plan can offer great functionality; four rooms all within one location.

SF: What are your tips for homeowners who want to make the most of this type of floor plan? How do you make it feel comfortable but not crowded?

HP: Focusing on furniture sizing and layout is vital when space planning. One of our biggest priorities is helping our clients find balance — meeting all their needs and achieving the maximum use of the space all while preventing overcrowding.

SF: Are there other aspects of your design work here that reflect how people are living these days, especially in a community and location like Sleight Farm?

HP: Our key focus at Sleight Farm was “Attainable Luxury”. Today’s buyers are looking for functional yet visually inviting living spaces for their families. They are looking to get the most use out of their home. We apply these key concepts to all of our projectsnot just residential. We find that today’s savvy consumers want the most bang for their buck for their home, office, or commercial space.

SF: One of the things people are loving about these homes is that they pack a lot of living space into a relatively small footprint. How did you infuse that into your work with the Clark model?

HP: This model was exciting for us because it gave us the opportunity to show how creative we could be in producing a usable yet efficient space. For example, notice how we integrated the home office into the great room as opposed to devoting an entire bedroom to that use.

In addition, we also always take into consideration the size, color story and visual weight of any and all of our furniture and accessory selections. This all plays a key factor in how we visually expand a small footprint.

As a full-service Interior Design firm in the Hudson Valley, we are very successful with furnishing our models, as well our clients spaces, because we source direct. We are not limited to retail sources that are slowly but surely a decreasing option, with limited product selections. We have a plethora of custom and readymade vendors at our fingertips.

SF: What do you want home shoppers to take away from their experience visiting the Glens model?

HP: We want potential homeowners to enthusiastically visualize this space as ‘their home’ and, when they purchase it, to be able to replicate the environment of the model with ease.
